Consultancy on Implementation of Digital Signatures

What is digital signature?

A digital signature is a modern alternative to signing documents with paper and pen, used to validate the authenticity and integrity of a message, software or digital document. It overcome the problem of impersonation and tampering in digital communications.

It guarantees that information has not been modified after signing the document, as if it were protected by a tamper-proof seal that is broken if the contents were altered. It's the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature or stamped seal, but it offers far more inherent security.

It uses an advanced mathematical technique to check the authenticity and integrity of digital messages and documents. It guarantees that the contents of a message are not altered in transit, ensure the authenticity of the signer and make it difficult for the signer to deny having signed something as the digital signature is unique to both the document and the signer and it binds them together.

What is the legal validity of digital signatures?

In many countries, including Sri Lanka, digital signatures are considered legally binding in the same way as traditional handwritten document signatures. Necessary provisions have been provided under the Electronic Transaction Act No 19 of 2006.
